  • From 1988 to 1996, many tapes had a white screen test pattern (with optional red bars until 1989) and/or a closing black screen with a moaning sound.

Pre-1984 test patterns[edit]

Tapes duplicated at Bell & Howell before Q4 1984 (i.e. before the 40th week of 1984) had a wide variety of test patterns, all lasting up to 60 seconds in length. Tapes confirmed to not have test patterns are listed in the next section. If you don't know what test pattern is on a tape, or whether or not such a tape had a test pattern, list it here without any additional info apart from the name of the releasing company and the year of release; if you can 100% confirm such a tape did not have a test pattern after all, move it to the next section. Also, for Disney tapes, check if the bottom of the square label says "Fotomat Drive-Thru Movies" instead of "For Rental Only, Not for Sale" or "For Sale Only, Not Intended for Rental" before moving anything, because if it says "Fotomat Drive-Thru Movies", it was definitely duplicated at Bell & Howell.

CPVS pressings are not listed.

Tapes with the 1350-second test pattern[edit]

Between Q4 1984 and Q2 1987, the standard test pattern was the 150-second white screen with the 1000 Hz tone. Some tapes duplicated during this period, however, used a much longer test pattern.

Post-1984 tapes with test patterns at different pitches[edit]

Even after the white screen with the 1000 Hz tone became the standard in Q4 1984, a few tapes still used different tones.

  • Nick and Noel (Family Home Entertainment, 1995) - White screen, 1133 Hz (30 seconds)
  • Toy Story (Walt Disney Home Video, 1996, Mexican release) - White screen, 1025 Hz (60 seconds)
  • The War (MCA/Universal Home Video, 1995) - White screen, 950 Hz (15 seconds)

Honorable mentions[edit]

This section is for oddities involving these test patterns.

  • From Here to Eternity (Columbia TriStar Home Video, 1992) - After 1995, the final stretch of black screen showed a couple of seconds of the standard test pattern from when this release was first mastered.
  • The Sleeping Beauty (Thorn EMI/HBO Video, 1985) - Copies duplicated at VCA/Technicolor still retain the first minute of the original test pattern at the end before cutting back to a black screen.
