History[edit]

In 1981, Noel C. Bloom, founders of the porn company Caballero Control Corporation, launched Family Home Entertainment to distribute non-adult programming. The company grew in 1982 when it picked up the distribution rights to Wizard Video's titles, as well as titles by Monterey Home Video, a joint venture between Bloom and Scott Mansfield, and many of titles released under the FHE label was picked up by MGM/UA Home Video for distribution on videocassette and on the CED format.

In 1983, FHE would lose the distribution rights to Wizard's titles to Spectrum Video, while picking up a new label for non-family releases, U.S.A. Home Video to fill the void.

In 1984, both FHE and U.S.A became part of International Video Entertainment. IVE would later launch new sublabels, U.S.A. Sports Video for sports titles, ThrillerVideo for horror titles, mainly hosted by Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, Adventure Video, for adventure titles, hosted by Sybil Danning and The Video Late Show for nostalgic titles, in addition to the USA and FHE labels. Relations between IVE and MGM/UA began to grow sour, that led to MGM/UA's contract for distributing FHE titles to expire in mid-1985.

In 1986, the company was sold to Carolco Pictures, and Bloom quit in 1987 to form Celebrity Home Entertainment. Around the time, the company signed a deal with MCA Distributing Corporation to distribute titles, for a five-year period until 1992. In mid-1987, both the U.S.A. labels, along with ThrillerVideo and Adventure Video would be dropped with titles now branding under the IVE name. IVE would lose distribution rights of Monterey's titles to Fries Home Video.

In late 1987, the company acquired Vista Home Video from The Vista Organization, and the following year, IVE merged with Lieberman to form LIVE Entertainment. In 1988, the company launched another label, Radio Vision Video as a joint venture with Radio Vision International for music content, and by 1989, the company launched the King Bee Video label as another nostalgic-based label.

In 1990, Carolco formed Carolco Home Video with LIVE serving as marketer, with the intent to release titles by Carolco. Also that year, International Video Entertainment became Live Home Video. In 1991, it acquired Vestron Video, and launched a budget label Avid Home Entertainment. In 1992, its agreement with Uni Distribution expired, and it was shifted to Warner-Elektra-Atlantic Corporation for four years.

In 1996, Live Entertainment became self-distributed again, and in 1997, the Avid label was dissolved. Later that year, the company begin distributing titles from Hallmark Home Entertainment.

In 1997, Live was sold to Bain Capital and rebranded the company to Artisan Entertainment in 1998 to disassociate themselves with mediocre titles and the controversies that followed the highly-publicized Menendez murders. The home video unit became Artisan Home Entertainment soon afterwards.

In 2003, it was sold to Lions Gate Entertainment and rebranded as Lions Gate Home Entertainment.
